TRIBUTE TO GEORGE VERWER (1938-2023)

Written by Dr Samuel Cueva

Samuel Cueva, PhD. Missiologist, lecturer and missions consultant. He promotes two-way bridges for the fulfillment of the mission on each continent, through a theology of reciprocal collaboration. Born in Peru and resident in London (UK). Founder of Mission for the Third Millennium, and one of the Directors of CMMW.

The founder of Operation Mobilization (OM), and former international director, George Verwer went to his appointment with Jesus Christ on Friday the 14th of April at 11:50 p.m. in the city of London.

George Verwer was a passionate mobilizer of short-term and long-term missions. He sent missionaries to all continents, and currently OM has more than 3,300 missionaries in more than 100 countries, who are preaching the unchanging gospel every year.

George Verwer began his first missionary trip to Mexico in 1957, then he went to Spain in 1960 to distribute Christian literature. In 1963 he began his missionary mobilization by sending teams to Europe, India, and the Muslim world.

We met in 2001 in London, and from that date he helped me as one of the speakers at the Mission for the Third Millennium conferences, which we organized in different continents. He always had a passionate message to win the world for Christ. He liked to talk a lot about the wonderful grace of God. He bought ships to mobilize and train missionaries from different countries, and was a promoter of the distribution of Christian literature and Bibles in the world.

George Verwer was characterized by wearing a jacket that had an impression of the world. He once gave me one of them. Once he called me from Paris and another time from Mexico to tell me: I am praying for you brother, do not be discouraged, keep going. That was George Verwer, humble and with an interest in helping others. Thank God for his life, his vision and passion to mobilize the church for redemptive mission. His works follow him (Rev. 14:13).
